How Music Provides Stress Relief
If you have one of those days where you have a test to study for or do chores around the house that you do not want to do, people tend to listen to music. What is it about music that allows us to destress? Based on the tone, harmony, and familiar melody of the song, music has the power to lower our stress levels and providing overall good mental health.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to which music to listen to in order to be relaxed. Some people prefer to listen to slow, quiet classical music such as the violin, the piano, the flute, the harp, or a combination of them all. Even if you are not a classical music listener, it would not hurt to try in order to reduce stress levels. Some also like to listen to the sound of water in nature albums as it can bring you back to a time you were relaxed by a waterfall or when you were on the beach. Some can also feel listening to birds can slow the mind down and relieve stress. Anti-stress music can serve as a great distraction from the troublesome thoughts swimming in your head.
Music is portable in which you can listen to it in the car, on the radio, or your CD/MP3/phone with headphones. Singing along to the songs can also help relieve tension. Listening to calm music can also help you sleep better while promoting peace and relaxation. It has been proven that hospital patients experience reduced stress and anxiety before and after surgery listening to music with headphones. The elderly had increased self-esteem as well as reduced depression when listening to music.
There was a study done in the UK by Mindlab International where participants were to solve difficult puzzles that would bring them stress while listening to music. They would measure brain activity, heart rate, blood pressure, and rate of breathing. Out of all of the ten songs played, listening to the song “Weightless” by Marconi Union caused 65% of participants to have overall reduced anxiety and 35% reduction in the physiological resting rates. Marconi Union purposefully made this song with sound therapists by using carefully arranged rhythm, harmonies, and bass line that helps slow heart rate, blood pressure, and low stress levels. Music can provide a great source of relief to those under stress.
