Teaching children to drink at home

It is reported that introducing children to alcohol early on in life, could lead to the development of alcoholism. The research seems to show that the younger a child is when they have the first drink – the more likely they are to develop alcoholism later in life, and the more likely they are to develop alcohol related illnesses.

This is perhaps a timely reminder that Dr. Margaret Ann McCann wrote an excellent blog piece a while back entitled “Should parents teach their children to drink”. She concluded that parents should not encourage children to drink at all – at least not until they are well into their teens. Learning how to drink alcohol is a lesson than the majority of us need to learn at some point, but learning how to say no to alcohol is another very important message – which is best taught at home.
