Drugs: Withdrawal and Detox Timelines

Withdrawal Symptoms and Detox

Once an individual has become dependent on a particular substance, he or she will experience withdrawal symptoms during the period of detoxification.

The type and potency of withdrawal symptoms will vary from substance to substance, and person to person as different drugs interact differently with our bodies. For example, drugs are absorbed and remain active in our bodies for differing amounts of time. This is referred to as the drug’s “half-life“, usually drugs with shorter half-lives come with stronger withdrawal problems than those with longer half-lives. The severity and duration of withdrawal is influenced by other factors:

  • Length of substance dependency

  • Amount taken each time

  • Method of drug taking (snorting, smoking, swallowing or injecting)

  • Family history/genetics
