Non Benzodiazepine Sedatives are the most common medication prescribed to treat sleep problems, especially chronic insomnia. Nonbenzodiazepines interact with benzodiazepine-like receptors, but are structurally different from benzodiazepines. They bond to Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) receptors which leads to slowing down brain activity, inducing relaxation, euphoria and promoting sleep.
However, Non Benzodiazepine Sedatives like Zaleplon (Sonata), Eszopiclone (Lunesta) or Zolpidem (Ambien) have a high potential for addiction if used long-term, abused outside a doctor’s prescription or in combination with other drugs and alcohol.
