Why Do Women Need Rehab?
As a woman struggling with alcohol or drug addiction, you face a unique set of challenges that can significantly complicate your recovery journey.1 Recognising these many complexities becomes crucial in acknowledging the issue, seeking appropriate support, and successfully navigating the path to a life free from substance dependency.
Long-Term Risks of Addiction for Women
Alcohol and drugs can have a complicated effect on women. Women are at a high risk of health complications such as liver damage, brain damage, heart disease, and breast cancer.
How Are Women Affected by Addiction?
Women often have to balance multiple roles in life which can take a toll on their mental health. Combined with biological, psychological, and social factors, this can make women vulnerable to substance misuse and may make recovery more difficult in some cases.
Seven Reasons Why Women Delay Rehab:
- Stigma – Because there’s still a certain stigma attached to women and addiction, you may be hesitant to reach out for the support you truly need. Fear of judgment and societal labels can make it harder to admit that you have a problem, let alone ask for help. For mothers, the fear of being labelled a ‘bad mother’ prevents many women for reaching out for rehab.2
- Family life – Balancing family, work, and self-care amid struggling with alcohol or drug misuse adds additional complexity. There is always a pressure for women to ‘keep going’ and usually a burden of responsibility for keeping the family and home running. You’re less likely to take time off work if you’re worried about job security or
- Child care – One key reason women delay rehab is the concern that their children will be taken into care by Social Services.3 On top of this the feeling that they will be letting their children down by needing to take four weeks away from them can prevent them seeking residential rehab.
- Mental health – Woman facing addiction have a high chance of having a dual diagnosis involving underlying mental health issues like depression, anxiety, co-dependency, or eating disorders.
- Eating disorders – Fear of eating in front of others and fear of food sometimes prevents women considering residential rehab. At Castle Craig we offer options for our patients to eat in a quieter area of the dining room.
- Trauma – Traumatic events such as sexual assault and the fear of addressing the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder can cause women to delay rehab.
- Shame – Lastly, women may disregard the signs of drug or alcohol addiction due to fear or shame, unaware of the potential impact on their physical and mental well-being.
