Long-Term Drug & Alcohol Rehab: Why It Might Be Beneficial

I am here for Alcohol | Drugs | Other addiction

There are several benefits of long-stay rehab for alcohol and drug addictions. The main advantage is that patients can experience two to three months focused entirely on their recovery. Patients often find what is achieved in this length of time is far more effective than shorter programmes.

Extended stay programmes allow patients ample opportunity to learn, practice and integrate healthy coping mechanisms. Long stay addiction treatment will enable them to build better habits that serve them as well as raise their self-esteem and rebuild their relationship with themselves and their family.

But bear in mind, even with all these benefits, long-stay rehab programmes will not be for everyone. Our medical opinion is that the longer time you will spend in rehabilitation, the better – and this is true according to our statistics.

Therefore, we always recommend a minimum of five weeks in treatment, which will see you complete detox, be diagnosed and undergo intensive therapy.

How long does addiction treatment take?

  • Detox: 3-10 days (methadone can take up to 20 days, and Benzodiazepines can take between 2-8 weeks).
  • Short stay residential treatment including detox: 28 days
  • Long-term residential treatment: 60-90 days

Long stay rehabs typically offer the same therapies and treatments that 30-day programmes offer. Rehab durations longer than two months are recommended for those who suffer from mental health conditions alongside addiction.

60-day rehab

Most 60-day treatment programmes will offer a customised approach to recovery as each case of addiction is unique. After all, everyone experiences and processes trauma differently,

What this means is that each patient will receive therapy that will meet their needs.

During 60 days in rehab, you may partake in:

Castle Craig relies on several heavy evidence-backed, scientific treatments and therapies that offer a  well-rounded, comprehensive drug and alcohol programme.

The following are different treatment types that we might be able to offer in a 60-day rehab programme:

  • Medically managed, monitored and supervised detoxes: Most people will begin their addiction treatment with a medical detox at our inpatient, residential rehab. Here, we help patients safely withdraw from their substances. Medication can even be administered to make the withdrawal process more comfortable, which can also help to reduce cravings. Detox typically lasts from 7-10 days.
  • Clinic psychiatric diagnosis: Once the detox has finished, you will be ready to undergo a clinical evaluation to determine any underlying mental health conditions or disorders. This makes all the difference for your recovery.
  • Recovery plan: With your diagnosis, a psychiatrist and therapist will then draw up a unique recovery plan. This will include your therapy, medication, counselling, aftercare plans.
  • Therapy: Various forms of therapy may be available to you depending on your circumstances; examples include behavioural therapies like cognitive-behavioural therapy, EMDR and MET as well as yoga and art therapy.
  • Counselling: Patients will undertake numerous counselling sessions daily. This will involve 1-1, family and group therapy.
  • Relapse prevention: Individuals will learn essential coping mechanisms and techniques to deal with their cravings and triggers.
  • Aftercare planning: The recovery process is a lifelong journey. Even after treatment has come to an end, patients may need to continue with therapy and other types of outpatient programmes to participate in long-term sobriety.
  • Support groups: We also integrate 12-step meetings and addiction programs to build peer-to-peer support and understanding.

A typical day in a 60-day addiction programme

Castle Craig provide busy, daily schedules packed with support, therapy, wellbeing and education. This helps our patients form good habits and a healthy routine that promotes productivity.

Typical days can look like this:

  • Breakfast/Personal time
  • Group/1-1 therapy
  • Exercise
  • Lunch/Free time
  • Additional therapy sessions
  • Lectures
  • Dinner
  • NA/AA participation (women-only groups available)
  • Group activity
  • Lights out

Patients can expect the overall structure of their rehabilitation programme to be similar with unique therapies scheduled around main events. The patient will receive their schedule that is based on their needs.

90-day rehab

Conducted in a residential, inpatient setting, patients live at our facility and interact with their peers, therapists and doctors.

This length of stay is better for those who have relatively severe or long-standing addiction problems. This is because it allows for around-the-clock supervision and a higher standard of care.

The added time spent in our residential rehab clinic works to empower individuals to learn solid relapse prevention skills and learn essential methods to manage stress and triggers.

We recommend a 90-day rehab stay for those with underlying mental health issues, a weak support system, or a chaotic home life. Extended stays typically benefit those with severe addictions and co-occurring dual diagnoses, where suicidal thoughts and behaviour may occur.

Addictions that are primarily treated in long-stay programmes:

How are 90-day rehab programmes different from others?

The same therapies are still offered and continued with a long term stay, but the extra time allows the patient to continue in their positive and sober environment.

  • Community residential care can contribute to substance abuse patients’ treatment outcomes; however, longer-term supportive care is needed for substance abuse patients with more severe and chronic disorders. – NIH.

The pros of a 90-day rehabilitation programme

  • More time to master and focus on the skills of recovery
  • A breather from life’s demands and temptations
  • True chance to break habits
  • Better outcomes

Proof of Longer Treatment Success

The most important conclusion of this study is that it proved longer addiction treatment significantly improves long-term recovery rates. There has been an argument supporting longer-length rehab treatment for many years, and several other research results have supported the claim that a short, 30-day-quick-fix treatment plan has high relapse rates.

For example, a 1999 research paper from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)  investigated relapse rates of 1,605 cocaine users a year after treatment, showing that 35% of patients treated for 90 days and below relapsed, while only 17% of those treated for longer did.

A 2001 study by the University of California included 1,167 adolescents undergoing treatment for substance abuse. It showed that those in rehab treatment for longer than 90 days were less likely to relapse than adolescents who only stayed 21 days.

Do I need long stay-care?

Are you unsure whether or not long stay rehab will be the best option for you? Take a look at these examples of the  diagnostic criteria for substance abuse:

  • You spend a great deal of time obtaining, using and recovering from alcohol or drugs
  • Have made unsuccessful attempts to quit or cut back
  • You use drugs and drink more than initially intended
  • You no longer participate in activities you used to enjoy
  • You do not keep up with your professional obligations
  • Your relationships are suffering as a consequence of your dependency
  • You crave drugs and alcohol intensely when you cannot use them
  • You experience withdrawal when you cannot use or drink

“If you show two or more of these signs, it might indicate a severe substance use disorder, which may require longer periods of treatment. See our Advanced Treatment programme for extending your stay at rehab after the initial 5 weeks.”
