What is Lunesta?

The generic drug eszopiclone is usually marketed under the brand name Lunesta. Lunesta is a non-benzodiazepine prescription medication used to treat sleep disorders.

As a sedative-hypnotic, it is similar to benzodiazepines because it targets the same brain networks and slows down the brain activity by enhancing the chemical GABA. This leads to a decrease of stress-response functions such as blood pressure, pulse, breathing and body temperature.

Lunesta is also referred to as a “z-drug”, because it is considered to have a lower tendency for addiction. However, it can still trigger addiction after regular use or abuse.

Common street names for Lunesta include: sleepers, zombies and sleepeasies.

What is Lunesta prescribed for?

Eszopiclone, a drug that depresses the central nervous system, is the active ingredient in Lunesta. Eszopiclone (Lunesta) is prescribed as a sleep aid in the treatment of insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Lunesta Rehab Treatment

Lunesta withdrawal symptoms commonly include anxiety, unsettling dreams and sleep difficulties, as well as fatigue, irritability, muscle spasm and nausea. When quitting cold turkey, users have experienced severe effects such as panic attacks and seizures.

That is why a medically managed withdrawal process from eszopiclone (Lunesta) is the appropriate treatment option: at Castle Craig this involves round-the-clock medically supervised detox to help patients break the cycle of Lunesta use.

The patient’s physical comfort and safety during eszopiclone (Lunesta) detox is our utmost priority. Nurses monitor each patient’s withdrawal signs regularly, so that any medication intake can be adjusted accordingly.

Eszopiclone (Lunesta) detox at Castle Craig Rehab starts with a thorough pre-assessment by our Consultant Psychiatrist to determine the patient’s personalised Lunesta detox programme. They will gather all relevant medical history and drug use history information and prescribe any medication for managing eszopiclone (Lunesta) withdrawal symptoms.

The duration of Lunesta detox will also be assessed on a case-by-case basis, as it depends on how much of the medication is in the patient’s body and for how long they had been using it, as well as other drugs. Lunesta detox may take a long time, as with all benzodiazepines. This needs to be monitored by the medical team.

Rehab Treatment for Eszopiclone (Lunesta) Addiction

Eszopiclone (Lunesta) rehab treatment includes psychotherapy within our residential rehab programme. During therapy, the patient, along with their personal therapist work on breaking the psychological addiction to Lunesta.

Targeted individual counselling and group therapy sessions, along with other complementary therapies, educational lectures and relapse prevention seminars are used to address the underlying factors for their insomnia and subsequent Lunesta addiction. Patients are taught to confront these issues and deal with Lunesta cravings by using healthy coping skills

As Lunesta treats sleep disorders, recovering patients will attend various complementary therapies, such as mindfulness therapy, relaxation therapy, acupuncture or massage to regain healthy sleep habits. Nutritional meal planning and regular fitness programs are also part of the treatment plan.

Our eszopiclone (Lunesta) rehab programme also makes use of 12-step support groups such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA), which will be a valuable resource during eszopiclone aftercare.

We also have the expertise to treat dual-diagnosis, which is common among Lunesta users. Since Lunesta abuse can lead to a co-occurring mental health disorder, such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, our treatment programme is tailored to address these disorders at the same time.
