Nootropics are prescribed for several medical conditions as an adjuvant for supporting mental functions, daily cognitive effort and to protect against long-term risk, rather than as the main medication in treating mental pathology directly.

Nevertheless, all these drugs can lead to habit formation, tolerance and ultimately addiction when misused or abused, causing adverse physical and psychological effects on normal brain functioning, cardiac function, mood and stress levels, cognitive regulation.
