Non Benzodiazepine Sedatives

Non-benzodiazepine sedatives are the most common medication prescribed to treat sleep problems–most commonly chronic insomnia. Nonbenzodiazepines interact with benzodiazepine-like receptors but are structurally different from benzodiazepines. They bond to Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) receptors which lead to slowing down brain activity, inducing relaxation, euphoria and promoting sleep.

However, Non-Benzodiazepine Sedatives have a high potential for addiction if used long-term, abused outside a doctor’s prescription or in combination with other drugs and alcohol. These include:
