Sedatives, also known as sedative hypnotics or tranquilizers, work by producing effects such as reduced anxiety or sleepiness.
Physical dependence and eventually addiction to sedatives can occur when these medications are taken for long periods of time, or in higher quantities than prescribed.
Non Benzodiazepine Sedatives
Non benzodiazepine sedatives are the most common medication prescribed to treat sleep problems–most commonly chronic insomnia. Nonbenzodiazepines interact with benzodiazepine-like receptors, but are structurally different from benzodiazepines. They bond to Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) receptors which leads to slowing down brain activity, inducing relaxation, euphoria and promoting sleep.
However, Non Benzodiazepine Sedatives have a high potential for addiction if used long-term, abused outside a doctor’s prescription or in combination with other drugs and alcohol. These include:
