What is Armodafinil?

Armodafinil is a eugeroic nootropic drug that promotes wakefulness, increases mental alertness and overall cognitive performance. Armodafinil is mainly used to treat narcolepsy, insomnia, sleep apnea and helps people with irregular sleep habits like shift workers who suffer from daytime fatigue.

Nuvigil and Waklert are two brand names that armodafinil is sold under as a prescription medication.

Armodafinil (Nuvigil) is the follow-up to the modafinil (Provigil) drug and has been in use since 2007. The main difference between them is that while Provigil uses both the R and the S isomers of the active ingredient modafinil, Nuvigil only contains the R isomer.

This modified chemical structure makes Nuvigil an improved, more potent drug than Provigil, which requires smaller doses to produce similar effects. Nuvigil is also considered more addictive than Provigil.

What is Armodafinil (Nuvigil) prescribed for?

Apart from its medically approved uses as a prescription medication for sleep disorders, taking armodafinil is known to improve focus, enhance mood, confidence and motivation.

Other off-label uses that have been found effective for armodafinil are: as an appetite suppressant or diet pill for weight loss or as a smart-drug for enhancing study skills.

Nevertheless, misusing Nuvigil without a doctor’s supervision may lead to psychological or physical dependence and ultimately addiction.

Armodafinil (Nuvigil) side effects are similar to those linked to Modafinil, which includes: headaches, fatigue, nervousness, dizziness, nausea, stomach or intestinal problems.
