Oxycodone – also referred to as OxyCotin or Percocet – is an opioid painkiller drug. It is a narcotic analgesic and is prescribed to relieve moderate to severe pain. Oxycodone and its derivatives – like OxyContin – is a popular street drug and a commonly abused prescription drug because it relieves pain and at the same time produces an euphoric effect similar to heroin. People who abuse oxycodone crush the tablets and swallow the powder, or dilute the tablet in water and inject it so as to get the drug’s full effect as quickly as possible.
Oxycodone is a highly addictive drug that can lead to physical dependency. Common brand names for oxycodone-based medication include OxyContin, OxyIR, OxyFast, Percocet and Percodan.
What is Oxycodone prescribed for?
Doctors commonly prescribe Oxycodone to relieve short-term pain resulting from surgery, injuries, dental procedures or migraines. Oxycodone is also used in the management of chronic back pain, neck pain, arthritis, diabetic neuropathy or cancer. It may also be prescribed for insomnia and coughing.
Treatment and Detoxification
Treatment begins with a personalised oxycodone detox programme. Our Consultant Psychiatrist carries out a pre-assessment to determine the patient’s individual detox needs.
Oxycodone detox involves ongoing medical supervision. At Castle Craig, we provide round-the-clock medically monitored detox. The patient’s vital signs and withdrawal symptoms from oxycodone abuse are continually checked by our inpatient nursing staff.
In order to ensure each patient’s physical comfort during the detox process, the oxycodone dose is gradually reduced, based on each patient’s continual assessment, until complete abstinence is achieved. Other medication may be used to help ease the oxycodone withdrawal symptoms.
Oxycodone detox may last for 5-7 days or more, depending on how frequently, in what quantity and for how long OxyContin or Percocet had been abused, and whether the patient has been taking any other drugs alongside Oxycodone.
Following oxycodone detox, the patient continues treatment in our residential rehab programme. Inpatient rehab is considered the best type of program for a full recovery from oxycodone addiction.
At Castle Craig Rehab we offer the structured, integrated treatment that is needed during the early stage of OxyContin or Percocet abuse recovery. Each patient has their own individual treatment plan that addresses their specific medical history and therapeutic needs.
Our residential programme allows patients to attend daily individual counselling and group therapy to address the underlying roots of their oxycodone drugs abuse without being exposed to the relapse triggers in their home environment.
A combination of complementary therapies, educational lectures and relapse prevention seminars, alongside healthy, regular meals and exercise will help the patient regain their physical and mental wellbeing.
During OxyContin or Percocet treatment at Castle Craig, patients are also introduced to 12-step support groups, which will be a valuable resource throughout their aftercare.
Castle Craig’s comprehensive care is designed to support the patient before, during and after treatment into recovery and beyond. Our team of addiction experts makes this process easier and ensure the recovering addict’s safety.
